  1. Here are our current recommendations for virus-related tools. Such tools can
  2. be divided into three classes: those that prevent infections, those that warn
  3. you when an infection is present, and those that remove infection. This
  4. message only discusses non-commercial software.

  7. 1. Prevention
  8.  
  9.    Two excellent tools for prevention of viral infections are the Disinfectant
  10. extension (distributed as part of the Disinfectant application) and
  11. the Gatekeeper package.
  12.  
  13.    The Disinfectant extension is very easy to install and requires no
  14. user configuration. However, it is important to stay up-to-date with this
  15. tool, because it only recognizes viruses it has been taught about.

  17.    Gatekeeper is an effective virus-prevention method for the more
  18. technically inclined. It requires some customization to work well in a
  19. particular environment. The benefit of Gatekeeper is that it provides
  20. some protection against some possible kinds of future virus, not just
  21. those that are known today.

  23. 2. Detection

  25.    The most complete and reliable tool is Disinfectant, combined with the
  26. Disinfectant extension.

  28. 3. Removal
  29.  
  30.    There is no question here: Disinfectant is the big winner. It can handle
  31. many situations that even commercial programs such as Virex cannot,
  32. such as files with multiple infections.
